Learning at home presentation at the 'Science is Cool' Virtual Unconference

With NSTA's annual conference canceled due to coronavirus concerns, our friends from PocketLab decided to organize the first ScIC (Science is Cool) one-day conference that aimed to combine the best parts of conferences - connecting, learning, idea sharing, within a fun online environment. Over 3000 participants from around the world registered and Eugene and Matt (from the Ask Matt podcast) presented on 'Engaging Students In Home-based Projects to Promote NGSS Learning'. After a brief introduction into Green Ninja's program and the focus around NGSS and the environment, Eugene and Matt provide examples of how storytelling and filmmaking can we used to create home-based student projects that ideally fit into an NGSS learning experience.

Our favorite quote from their presentation:

"Today is a special day...in addition to having our Science is Cool Conference, today is also National Burrito Day..." - Eugene

Are you curious why burritos came up in their science presentation - you'll have to watch to find out!

"In addition to the three dimensions of NGSS, the biggest thing that California has stamped on to things is this idea that we really want to make sure that science instruction is relevant to our local communities and to our students' interests." - Matt

Matt is one of the chief authors of California's NGSS Science Framework and it's interesting to hear the strong emphasis in making learning relevant to students through a local context.
